30th January 2011 is the 62nd anniversary of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and this has been observed as the Martyr’s day in India remembering all those Martyrs who laid down their lives for our nation.

January 30th of 1948, the black day of sorrow in India. India lost its most respected and loved leader who had led them to their independence , was assassinated by a person named Nathuram Godsey. Mahatma meaning the Great Soul has been the name given to him for all the scarifices he went through for the independence of india through Ahimsa and Satyagraha methods. He was a great man and to lose the architect of Indian Independence , so soon after the independence was blow to the people of India. January 30th the day on which he passed away is called as the Martyr’s day.

Hemant Karkare was the chief of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad. He was killed during the 2008 Mumbai attacks after being shot three times in the chest.
At 9.45 p.m. while having his dinner at his Dadar residence, he received a call about a terrorist attack at C.S.T. (earlier V.T.) station. He switched on the TV for news and left at once with his driver and bodyguards for C.S.T. There he donned a bullet-proof vest and helmet (shown on news channels live), and went to Platform No.1, but found it deserted. He was then informed that the terrorists had moved to the Cama and Albless Hospital (“Cama”) next to the Azad Maidan police station. At the police station he met Addl. Commissioner, East Region Ashok Kamte who was summoned for his cool temper and negotiation skills and Sr. Inspector Vijay Salaskar, who was returning from Colaba after interrogating detained persons.
Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
(15 March 1977 – 28 November 2008)
Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, 31, was martyred while engaging terrorists on Friday at the Taj hotel. He was with the 51 Special Action Group of the force and was with the NSG on deputation. He has been with the Black Cat commando force for the last two years.
“Long Live Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan“, “Sandeep Unnikrishnan Amar Rahee” – these are the lines that were heard from outside the Bangalore house of the NSG Commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and thousands lined up to pay their last homage to the martyr who laid his life to save thousands of innocent people at hotel Taj Mahal Mumbai. On Friday, 28th November 06:00 PM IST Major Unnikrishnan was hit by terrorist bullet when he was taking part in evacuating Hotel Taj from the terrorists.
