Osama bin Laden, the world’s most wanted terror icon who orchestrated the 9/11 attack on the United States through his Al Qaeda outfit, was killed in Abbottabad near the Pakistan capital by US-led forces. Bin Laden was on the American Federal Bureau of Investigation’s lists of Ten Most Wanted Fugitives and Most Wanted Terrorists for his involvement in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings. From 2001 to 2011 bin Laden was a major target of the War on Terror, which has resulted in a total of between 80,000 and 1.2 million civilian deaths in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia between 2001 and 2007.

As per reports, the US used “multiple methods” to positively identify Osama’s remains, the most important being DNA evidence, which have confirmed the death.

At 1 am Pakistan time, a 40-minute US military operation with four helicopters burst into Osama’s hideaway in a town barely 60 kilometres from the Pakistan capital.

Bin Laden was shot in the head during the US raid, CNN said citing a Congressional source familiar with the operation. A team of 24 U.S. Navy SEALs from the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (SEAL Team Six), under the command of the Joint Special Operations Command and working with the CIA, stormed bin Laden’s compound in two helicopters. Bin Laden, three other men, and a woman were killed in a firefight in which U.S. forces sustained no casualties. However, one of the helicopters experienced mechanical difficulties and made a hard landing and was later destroyed by the SEALs on-site. The entire raid, including intelligence sweeps of the compound, was completed in less than 40 minutes. His body was taken and biometric facial recognition tests were performed. Within 24 hours of his death, Osama’s body was transported to the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson for final rites and burial at sea. One of bin Laden’s sons was killed in the raid, along with a man named Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti (also known as Arshad Khan), who was described as a courier, and his brother. He and his wife were killed as the commandos first entered their residence-a guest house on the grounds of the compoundKuwaiti’s brother and Osama bin Laden’s adult son, possibly Hamza, were killed in the main house. Bin Laden’s twelve-year-old daughter, who was reported to have witnessed her father being shot, was injured by flying debris. The Guardian reported, “she was comforting her father’s fifth wife, Amal Ahmed al-Sadah, 29, who was shot in the calf by commandos as they closed in on bin Laden.
